Bible Verse: “This is why the Father loves me: I give up my life so that I can take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I give it up because I want to. I have the right to give it up, and I have the right to take it up again. I received this commandment from my Father.”  John 10:17-18

Reflection: Children learn quickly the phrase, “I don’t have to do it if I don’t want to!” It could be cleaning the table, putting socks and shoes on, or going to school. Adults are not immune to this either; “I don’t want to go to work today, mow the yard, or clean the bathroom!” We value our freedom of choice!

It’s significant to me that Jesus says no one is forcing Him to do anything he doesn’t want to do. His Father has not sentenced Him to a pre-determined death. Jesus has a choice…it’s his choice to give up His life…or not.

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul, the classic hymn* asks.

It continues;
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul

Let us pause in this moment and allow our soul to give thanks to God and to the Lamb. After all, Jesus chose us, out of an immeasurable abundance of love.
