Bible Verse: You surround me—front and back. You put your hand on me. Psalm 139:5

Reflection:

I read this verse first in the NIV and noticed the word “hem”. My mind immediately went to ideas about sewing. Once I read other versions, I realized the word “hem” in this context means “surrounded” or “border”. What a peaceful thought to know that our Lord is always around us. Our Lord leads us from the front, attends to us at our sides, and supports us from behind. But going back to my original thought about the word “hem”, have you ever heard of the phrase “She’s hemmed into her mother’s skirt”? My grandmother would use this phrase to describe a little shy girl who would never leave her mom’s presence. The child would not depart from the mother, as if she was glued to her side. I like to think that Jesus is woven into our skirt of life. He completely envelops us with his love, care, and protection. He’s permanently stitched in and will never leave or forsake us.
