Bible Verse: At this, many of his disciples turned away and no longer accompanied him. Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered, “Lord, where would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are God’s holy one.” John 6:66-69

Reflection: No one is forced to follow Jesus. Coercion is not God’s way. In this question, we can see the free will choice that God gives to humanity.

Jesus knew the road of discipleship would be hard. The movement would lead to a cross and a tomb. If the disciples would rather not go that way, Jesus wanted them to have a way out.

This is why we call our faith a “practice” and not a “mandate.” We pray, read scripture, gather to worship, fast, and give out of freedom. Because in our soul, I believe we also believe, “Lord, where would we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Today, give thanks for the Savior who invites us to follow Him freely.
